Recently I got the chance to visit and photograph Chance Brothers Glassworks in Smethwick. The buildings closed in 1981 and are Grade II listed and on the "at risk" register. More information can be obtained clicking MADE or Chance Glass Heritage
This picture was taken in Building A and shows what is believed to be an ex-submarine engine used to power the factory. Half the room is in darkness while the other half is exposed to daylight through the missing skylights that also let the rain in!
Exposure was taken for the highlights and the shadows were picked up a bit in Lightroom.
It's the people in the picture that really make it for me, they give movement to such an industrial portrait. What is the man photographing so carefully and where is the woman striding out to? The textures on the white wall and the plants growing up to the light all add to the sense of decay.
