"Ich bin ein European"
This phrase, used by Bill Drummond in his latest art work under Spaghetti Junction(1), is based on the words John Kennedy used, June 1963, delivering a speech in Berlin. Kennedy said, “Today, in the world of freedom, the proudest boast is Ich bin ein Berliner. All free men wherever they live are citizens of Berlin.”
In the wake of the referendum Drummond has used the word European instead. I have no idea which side Bill Drummond supported in the referendum but he is Scottish and the rest of his country voted clearly to remain. You can draw your own conclusions from his words.
This picture is one of a series I have taken showing his slogan style art (graffiti?) since he arrived along the canal under Spaghetti Junction in March 2014(2). The first instalment consisted of jam jars full of daffodils placed on the towpath. The rest, so far, have been painted slogans and posters.
I look forward to more from Bill Drummond, it brightens my walk every time I see a new one!
