This month, Imageye and Photo of the Month are both based on artworks. Imageye has photographs of a painting by Jane Farrington and an installation work by Nita Newman. The image of the painting is deliberately blurred caused by moving the camera in a steady arc during a long exposure. The photograph of the installation was taken at the #M5Mile event and is titled "11 Ribbons for Chance". This refers to the 11 years that Chance Glassworks has been saved. The painting is titled "Hilda".
So now I have two pictures of artworks, does this make my pictures art as well?
Both pieces were created by the artists over time, the time it took to do them, and when completed are both compiled under the all encompassing heading "Art". Both artists have created something from their imagination and with a considerable amount of skill. The painting could be based on an original photograph or series of photographs. The installation mimics "Tie a Yellow Ribbon round the Old Oak Tree". So neither is an original idea but both are original visions of the idea, the artists have created the work in their own way. They expanded the idea into an original completed artwork. But are they complete?
I have now photographed the works and turned them into my originals. I'm not saying I have created art, are photographs art? But I have created something you can see, I have expanded the originals even further. Someone down the line may alter my photographs into something else, thus creating their own originals based on my work which is based on someone else's work which is based on someone else's work. And so it goes on and on, originals becoming new originals, all based on a single idea, image, technique or technological method.
We have the picture of Hilda hanging in our house. I can look at it anytime and often do. The work by Nita Newman has gone. It was taken apart at the end of the #M5Mile event. So all I have are the photographs of it. These are my originals whilst the real work has gone for good.
Photos of art that are "Art"?
Many thanks to the artists involved. You can find more information about Nita Newman here http://bit.ly/2azNNyr
