This month I decided to go through some of my old photos, especially the Projects. One of my favourite projects involved photographing an old print shop in Wolverhampton back in 2015.
This picture concentrates on the hanging door bell. You can see where it has worn away the paint and plaster behind it as it swings and rings on every door opening. Then there’s “letterpress & litho” across the window, through which you can see the terraced houses across the road. Through the door window you can see the wheelie bin waiting to be emptied. (As I write this, some bins are still waiting, but that’s another story.)
Now, look closer above the bin. Two dolls hang on the iron gate. They’re either warding off evil spirits or warning of evil spirits. They may have just been placed out of reach of naughty children but they still seem a bit creepy.
I never did find out why they were there, I was too wrapped up in what I was doing in the print shop. It seems strange to me now, looking back, that I never took a picture of the dolls hanging there. I knew they were there as I had seen them when I got out of the car. They did seem odd but obviously I did not think they were worth a picture on their own. Another lesson learnt: never leave wishing you had taken that last shot!
